Chapter Fifteen

April was ablaze, and nothing could ever douse her. Not the deluge of Hebridean rain outside, not all the water of the Earth’s oceans. She burned so hot for his touch, it made her see little dancing points behind her eyes. And oh, those kisses! How he responded to her, as if he was tasting life for the first time.

Euan groaned and put his hand on the back of her head, pulling her against him, like a drowning man gasping for air. He tasted so masculine, like whisky and wind. The roughness of his scruff against her skin fuelled the flames inside her. She wanted to be scratched, to be marked by him. And do the same. His tongue ignited sparks that sent her blood boiling. It was addicting, the most amazing feeling in the world. And it wasn’t enough. She needed more. More. Her core clenched at the mere thought of it. She was ready to let go of all inhibitions and embrace that feral thing coursing through her veins.

God. Oh God. It’s happening.

‘This is not how it’s going down with us, April. Not here, not now.’

Wait. What?

A storm was raging in his eyes. ‘This is killing me right now. But not like this.’

April stopped breathing at his words. Heat radiated from her skin, a gush of arousal that hadn’t yet received the memo about the abrupt stop. ‘Not like this? What do you mean?’

The hunger in his eyes belied his words. He was conflicted, torn between restraint and the raw need that mirrored her own. She reached up, tracing the line of his jaw, feeling the tension coiled in his muscles.

‘Tell me, Euan.’ April’s voice held a plea and a challenge. ‘Why not? Give me one good reason. One.’ Her heart pummelled against her ribs, each beat echoing her longing.

He hesitated, a silent battle within him. ‘April, it’s not that I don’t want you,’ he said, tense with the effort of holding back, ‘as you can tell. But this,’ he motioned between them, ‘it’s not what you want. Not really. You deserve more than a quick rain-soaked shag with a random stranger who you’ll never see again.’

‘I’m so darn sick of people telling me what I should and shouldn’t want,’ she spat out, frustration boiling over.

‘I get it.’ His hand gently cupped her cheek, a tender contrast to the riot outside and inside herself. It felt like resting against a tree and snuggling into a favourite pillow at the same time. ‘If this ever happens,’ he leaned in, his breath warm against her skin, ‘it should be right for you. But let’s face it, it’s probably best if it never does.’ There was something in his voice, a hidden weight beneath the words.

‘Excuse me if I’m the one who’s a tad confused now.’ April’s anger flared at his change of heart. ‘Didn’t you just say you were dying to have me, like, less than three minutes ago? Something about nails and teeth?’ She watched his expression closely as he struggled to explain himself.
